Road Trip - Grasslands Wildlife and Plants

On this trip, we saw a lot of prairie plants, flowers and animals.  Many were what I grew up with but there are some that I'd never seen (or never paid attention to).  When you've been gone from a place and come back, you see it through new eyes and see the true beauty that lies there.  This trip was very good for me to rediscover what I grew up with and to realize how beautiful it truly is.

I must admit, I don't know the names of many of these plants and flowers.  If any of you can shed light on this for me, please share a comment.

Maybe the Dotted Blazingstar?

More mule deer, in the park:

Young bucks:

Bison in the river valley:

Prickly Pear Cactus:

Spider at the river:

These are some of the Northern Leopard Frogs that we saw - in the campground and down by the river:

Silver sagebrush:

Prairie dogs:

These little critters were so cute!!!  They chattered back and forth to each other and darted from one burrow to the next.

Swainson's Hawk in flight:

Burrowing owl, which is an endangered species:

Greater short-horned lizard:

These are also an endangered species.  Der spotted this little guy scurrying across the path when we were hiking Eagle Butte.  And this is about as big as they get!
